Why A Student Safety Program?

TRAFFIC CRASHES are the leading cause of injury and death among young Vermonters. The main factors contributing to this needless loss are: alcohol and other drugs, peer pressure, inexperience, poor attitude, speeding, not wearing safety belts, and lack of good judgment.

By joining VTLSP (Vermont Teen Leadership Safety Program) you can help change things for the better. We know that responsible young people are eager to change attitudes and behaviors toward substance use and traffic safety. Your involvement can make a difference and may save lives.

The VTLSP Mission

The purpose of VTLSP is to develop among Vermont's teen leaders an awareness of prevention and wellness issues including alcohol and other drug use, traffic safety and risk taking behaviors, and to provide them with the resources, skills and adult support with which to facilitate positive change among their peers.

VTLSP assures positive outcomes among its members by:

Increasing bonds
Teaching "life" skills
Setting and consistently enforcing expectations
Providing caring and support
Providing high expectation for success
Providing opportunities for meaningful participation/contribution

T-SHIRTS... free for all members of the GYLC Planning Committee and Youth Advisory Council; Advisors & National Conference participants.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL TRAINING... elected school representatives will attend at least two overnight leadership/safety trainings.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE REDUCED RATE... GYLC brings together student leaders and their advisors from across Vermont to learn, share and grow.

CONSULTANT SERVICES... professional educators experienced in safety, health and leadership education are available for consultation, meetings and workshops.

ADVISOR CONFERENCE AND TRAINING ... an overnight and all day session for school advisors.

MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATES... display on a wall or in your school trophy case.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE... members may apply for grants to help fund school representatives' attendance at the National Conference that VTLSP attends.

VTLSP FUN DAYS... members plan and participate in seasonal activities - just for the fun of it.

Promotes a safe, healthy and drug free lifestyle and provides resources, training and leadership opportunities for students and advisors.

Affiliation with national SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) provides expanded opportunities for Vermont's youth leaders.
